Effective July 1, 2007, the Iowa Civil Rights Act (Iowa Code Chapter 216) was amended to protect all Iowans on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, education, credit, and public accommodation. By law, Iowans can no longer be denied housing, education, or work simply because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
In addition to the State of Iowa, numerous cities and counties, business, colleges/universities, and other organizations protect LGBT people through local civil and human rights ordinances and policies.
