Barbara Helmick and Tiana Robison never thought much about having a wedding. They are domestic partners in Washington DC, where they live, and have been in a committed relationship for almost 20 years.

But just before their annual morel-hunting trip to Barbara's hometown of Columbus Junction, in southeast Iowa, the Supreme Court decision changed their plans. The two became the first same-sex couple to obtain a marriage license in Louisa County.

The day before their wedding on Sept. 19, Barbara and Tiana talked with us about how they met, the incredible number of family and friends who made the trek to their ceremony, and just how important the word "marriage" is.
