Liz Bennett
Liz Bennett is a 2007 graduate of Kirkwood Community College, and a 2010 graduate of Cornell College, in Mount Vernon, IA, where she received bachelor's degrees in both Politics and Women's Studies.
During her time at Cornell, Liz was very active both on and off campus. She raised $3,000 for 19 Cornell College students to attend the National Equality March for LGBT Civil Rights and organized the trip to Washington, D.C. In October 2009, as a Moderator for Sustained Dialogue, Liz facilitated social change by creating space for students to explore campus relationships strained by racial, social class, religious, and gender differences.
She was nominated for the 2010 Maduff Civil Rights Award and was privileged to be a 2010 recipient of the Cornell Fellows award. Liz is also a member of Linn County Stonewall Democrats, a Linn County Democrats Central Committee Member, and 2010 Precinct Caucus Chair.
The April 3, 2009 Supreme Court Decision was a catalyst for Liz. Since then, she has worked very hard to protect the freedom for gay and lesbian couples to marry in Iowa. As a 2009 One Iowa summer canvasser, Liz braved the Iowa heat as part of a team that collected petition signatures from thousands of fair-minded Iowans.
As a volunteer, Liz has led phone banks, canvassed, and organized a grassroots summit on Cornell College campus. Liz is happy to devote her passion to building-up the community of Iowans who support a culture of fairness in our state.
